Roberts Bay Colony Watch
With the cooperation of Sarasota High School and Audubon of Florida, Sarasota Audubon monitors the condition of the breeding colony islands in Roberts Bay, and the effects of erosion on the nesting sites. Students and SAS volunteers take monthly boat trips to help count birds, nests and chicks, along with fishing line removal.
Just south of Sarasota, the three tiny Roberts Bay Islands are an important colony for 800-1000 pairs of Brown Pelicans, Great Blue Herons, and Great Egrets, among other colonial nesting birds. The combined efforts of students, scientists and Audubon volunteers have substantially increased recognition for this locally notable project.
Rick Greenspun is the coordinator of the program. If you would like to volunteer for this critical and heartwarming effort, call Rick at 941-284-2055 or email.
Children’s Programs
We are working on several programs for kids, some of which will be ready this fall/winter season. Programs will be both inland (Celery Fields, wetlands habitat) and Siesta Key (coastal habitat). Stay tuned.
Scholarships
Sarasota Audubon has been providing scholarship funding for a number of years. One program is for high school students as they pursue environmental education in college, and at the other end of the spectrum, we provide funding for environmental camp scholarships for kids ages 5 to 12 years old.
