day trips - 2010/2011

All day trips meet at McDonald's (Bee Ridge/ Cattlemen) unless otherwise noted. Field trips are open to anyone interested in birding, wildlife watching or exploring Florida's natural areas. Suggested donation of $2 for members, $4 for non-members appreciated.

NO RESERVATIONS ARE NECESSARY UNLESS OTHERWISE INDICATED.

For more information, contact each individual Trip Leader.  TRIP WAIVER: Participation is on condition that Sarasota Audubon Society and its officers and volunteers will not be held liable for damage or injury to persons or property.  Further details and directions to be added later - please check back.

Thursdays at OSCAR SCHERER STATE PARK Every Thursday, October thro March (except Thanksgiving).  Bird walk to search for Florida Scrub Jays, N. Bobwhites, and other pine flatwood species. Meet inside the park at 8:30am at Lake Osprey/Nature Center (park fee). Park opens at 8am. Come join us for Pancake Breakfast before the walks Jan. thru March only. Saturday, Oct 2: MANATEE AUDUBON'S FELTS PRESERVE Join butterfly enthusiasts Stu Hills (922-5261) and Jeanne Dubi on a walk to locate and ID local butterflies. Meet at Starbucks (I-75/University Pkwy) at 9:30am.  Map
 
Wednesday, Oct. 6: ROBINSON PRESERVE This new Manatee County 487-acre waterfront preserve is being restored to a native wetland with hiking trails and boardwalks.  BRING LUNCH. Leader: Dan Irizarry (305-582-5786). Meet at the Robinson parking lot, corner of 99th St NW and 17th Ave NW in Bradenton at 8am.

Saturday, Oct 16: PINECRAFT PARK Look for fall migrants with Edith Miller (364-3637) at this local hotspot off Bahia Vista. Meet at Pinecraft Park at 9am.
 
Saturday, Oct 23: WATERSHED WEEK Bird Walk on the 'Wild Side' at the Celery Fields.  Meet at 9am at the gazebo on Palmer Blvd. $3 for adults; $2 for children.  For reservations and information, call Julie Byrne (379-3882).  Map
 
Saturday Oct 30: SIESTA KEY SHOREBIRDS Find resident and migrant shorebirds on Siesta Key. Meet at SK Public Beach parking lot (near pavilion) at 7:30am. Leader Rick Greenspun (284-2055).  Map

Saturday, Jan 22: CIRCLE B BAR PRESERVE This 1,267-acre property in Polk County has recently been added to the Great Florida Birding Trail.  Come help us find some of the 150 birds found on this preserve. Saturday, Jan 29: LETTUCE LAKE Bird the 3,500-ft. boardwalk, observation tower and nature trails at this Hillsborough County park with Lynn Jakubowicz, 355-4073. Meet at Starbucks (University & I-75 next to Home Depot) at 8am. BRING LUNCH
 
Saturday, Feb 5: TECO PLANT & GEORGE SIMMONS SP Join Stu Hills (922-5261) to look for manatees and shorebirds at these two Hillsborough County locations. Meet at Starbucks (University & I-75) next to Home Depot at 7:30am.
 
Monday, Feb 8: DUCKS/SHOREBIRDS: TIERRA VERDE PONDS & Ft. DE SOTO Join Dan Irizarry (305-582-5786) as he looks for migrating ducks at these two great Pinellas County locations.  Meet at the first rest stop before the Skyway Bridge at 7:30am. BRING LUNCH.

Friday/Saturday, Feb 18/19: WAKODAHATCHEE, GREEN CAY AND OKEEHEELEE in West Palm Beach County.  These wetlands have boardwalks and lots of birds all within easy viewing.  RESERVATIONS REQUIRED. Call Kathryn Young (612-760-1771). Fee $25.
 
Tuesday, Feb 22: FT. DESOTO SHOREBIRDS & DUCKS Join Lynn Jakubowicz, 355-4073, and Mary Heinlen to find these beautiful migrating birds. Meet at Starbucks (University & I-75 next to Home Depot) at 7:30am. BRING LUNCH.
 
Saturday, Feb 26: ALL ABOARD THE EAGLE TROLLEY Our Eagle expert Dale Nauman will give us the history and great looks at 3 active nests; leave the driving to us.  Call Kathryn Young (612-760-1771) for reservations'fee $25 for a 3-hour ride.
 
Sunday, Feb 27: PLANT AND BIRD WALK Join David Williamson (302-1808) on this walk thru the Florida Native Plant Nursery and Crowley Nature Center.  Meet at Fruitville Library at 8am. BRING LUNCH.
 
Wednesday, Mar 2: COCKROACH BAY AQUATIC PRESERVE Join Kathryn Young (612-760-1771) on a trip to this newly reclaimed and restored environmentally sensitive area. Meet at Starbucks (University & I-75 next to Home Depot) at 7:30am. BRING LUNCH

Thursday, Mar 17: RED BUG SLOUGH. Join leaders Stu Hills (922-5261) and Martha Straub as they look for birds and butterflies. Meet in the parking lot south of Proctor on Beneva at 8am.
 
Thursday, Mar 21: CAREFREE LEARNER Take a private boat ride to Roberts Bay Rookery to see and learn about breeding birds on the rookery islands. Meet at 9am next to Le Barge at Marina Jack's. Contact Kathryn Young (612-760-1771) for RESERVATIONS. Cost $20.
 
Friday, March 25: SPARROW DRIVE THRU MYAKKA SP Owen Comora leads this trip in the back of a pickup.  Owen will show us where to find Bachman Sparrows on their breeding territories. For RESERVATIONS, call Kathryn Young (612-760-1771). Cost $25. Limit 12 participants.

Tuesday, Apr 26: FORT DESOTO Join leader John Ginaven (383-5133) on another quest for migrants at this premier birding hotspot. Leave from the first rest area just after the tollbooths on the Sunshine Skyway Bridge (I-275) at 8am. BRING LUNCH.
 
Thursday, Apr 28: EGMONT KEY Take the ferry from Ft. DeSoto to this small island with leader Kathryn Young (612-760-1771) to find migrating birds. RESERVATIONS REQUIRED; BRING LUNCH.  Meet at Starbucks (University & I-75) at 7am.  Ferry leaves at 8:30 and returns at 1pm. Cost $20.
