The Great Florida Birding Trail is a project of the Florida Fish & Wildlife Conservation Commission. The layout highlights many sites all but lost among Florida's vast tourist industry, making many of the state's 470 species of birds easy to find. The sites are grouped into clusters within an hours drive of each other.
Sarasota County has long been known for its wildlife and protected areas, from hardwood hammocks to coastal islands, and many of these areas have been selected for inclusion on the Trail.
